Megan Mullally[1] was a singer before she got seven straight Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in “Will & Grace” (winning twice).
Now she is showing off her vocal talent in the band Nancy And Beth, which she describes as “punk-vaudeville” because, she says, “we don’t know what else to call it.”
Mullally can’t explain the band’s name. Her co-leader is Stephanie Hunt. She also can’t explain why the “a” in “And” is capitalized.
The band — mostly from Austin, Texas — finishes a five-night stand at Café Carlyle on Saturday. Mullally’s husband, Nick Offerman[2], of “Parks and Recreation,” is the band’s roadie, carrying gear and driving the van on their tour.
The other night in Bay Shore, LI, a fight broke out. “We were playing the last song of the night. It’s really rowdy and gets everyone on their feet. Two women start fighting. It continued about 10 minutes after the show ended,” Mullally told me.
“I thought, ‘Oh my God. We’re punk.’ It was an exciting turning point for us.”
The crowd at the Carlyle promises to be less violent. She checked out the room Monday night when Woody Allen played clarinet with the Eddy Davis New Orleans Jazz Band. “We’re getting rid of the grand piano,” she said.
