The passing of the torch at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade will take centerstage at Cardinal Timothy Dolan[1]’s residence, when Brian O’Dwyer, the activist and immigration and civil-rights attorney, is introduced as the grand marshal for next year’s parade.

O’Dwyer is the third member of his family to be grand marshal, following his father, Paul, the fiery Irish partisan, and his uncle William, the former New York mayor.

Both the cardinal and O’Dwyer have been strong proponents of immigration, a rebuff to the anti-immigrant sentiments emanating from the White House.

The Dec. 5 cocktail party looks ahead to the annual parade, scheduled this year for Saturday, March 16, 2019.

The parade is moved to Saturday when St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Sunday.
